Sirikanya (Sanya) Chiraroekmongkon is originally from Bangkok, Thailand and immigrated with her small family to the United States at the age of 10. Dr. Chiraroekmongkon is both a physician and family member of individuals with serious mental illness. As an undergraduate at the University of Florida, she earned a dual degree in Biochemistry and International Studies. She then spent a year studying Mandarin at Fudan University in Shanghai, China. At the University of Central Florida College of Medicine, she co-founded Chapman Compassionate Care, a student-run monthly skin-and-wound-care clinic serving the Orlando homeless community. Her passion for mental health translated into her spearheading another organization, Rising Youth, a nonprofit that provides mental wellness education for high-school students. She was honored with peer awards including Student Choice Award “for the student who represents the utmost in professionalism, knowledge, and a caring and compassionate attitude towards patient care” and the Osler Award “for the student who has demonstrated the most perseverance in overcoming obstacles to succeed,” and UCF’s highest award, the Order of Pegasus. Dr. Chiraroekmongkon is in her final year of psychiatry residency at Yale, has led as the resident leader of the Yale Global Mental Health program for three years, and served as a co-chair for the creation of the Department’s first Mission, Vision, and Values statement. She continues her passion for caring for individuals with mental illness, honoring an individual’s dignity and humanity, and contributing to a more equitable system.
